Power conditioning refers to the process of altering the characteristics of electrical power to ensure it is clean, stable, and suitable for the equipment it powers. The electricity supplied by the utility grid can be imperfect and is often subject to various disturbances that can damage sensitive electronics, cause data loss, or lead to equipment malfunction and a shorter lifespan. Power conditioning devices are designed to mitigate these issues, providing a higher quality power supply.

Common Power Quality Issues
The "dirty" power that power conditioning addresses can manifest in several ways:

Voltage Fluctuations: This includes both sags (a temporary drop in voltage) and swells (a temporary increase in voltage). These can be caused by the startup or shutdown of heavy electrical loads or by faults in the power grid.


Surges and Spikes: These are very brief but powerful increases in voltage that can reach thousands of volts. They are often caused by lightning strikes, utility switching operations, or the operation of large inductive loads.


Electrical Noise: This refers to unwanted high-frequency signals that can interfere with the operation of sensitive electronics. It can be caused by radio transmissions, industrial machinery, or other electronic devices.


Harmonic Distortion: This is a distortion of the ideal sine wave of the AC power supply. It is caused by non-linear loads, such as computers, LED lights, and variable-speed motors, which draw current in a non-sinusoidal manner. Surge Suppressors: These are the most basic form of power conditioning. They are designed to absorb and divert powerful voltage spikes away from sensitive equipment, protecting it from damage.


Voltage Regulators: Also known as automatic voltage regulators (AVR), these devices are designed to stabilize voltage levels. They automatically increase or decrease the output voltage to a constant, predetermined level, ensuring that equipment receives a steady supply of power despite fluctuations from the grid.


Isolation Transformers: These transformers provide a crucial layer of protection by physically and electrically separating the connected equipment from the power source. This helps to reduce electrical noise and protect against voltage spikes.


Filters: Power filters are used to remove electrical noise and harmonic distortion from the power supply. They can be either passive (using components like capacitors and inductors) or active (using power electronics to inject a corrective signal).


Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS): A UPS is a more comprehensive power conditioning solution. It not only provides backup power but also incorporates a voltage regulator and filters to deliver clean, stable power to connected equipment. In an online/double-conversion UPS, the incoming power is continuously converted to DC and then back to AC, providing a perfect sine wave and complete isolation from grid disturbances.

Power conditioning is crucial in environments where a consistent, high-quality power supply is essential. This includes:
