CFB 27 Offensive Line Play: How to Actually Pass Protect and Run Block
Offensive line play is the most overlooked aspect of College Football 27 Gameplay (https://cfb27.com/). Everyone wants to talk about quarterbacks and wide receivers, but if your left tackle is getting beaten off the edge in 1.8 seconds, none of that matters. Here is everything you need to know about how blocking works in CFB 27 and how to scheme around a weak offensive line.

## Understanding the Blocking AI

CFB 27 uses a layered blocking system. Each offensive lineman makes independent decisions based on three factors: their awareness rating, the defensive front alignment, and your protection call. The interaction of these three factors determines whether your quarterback has a clean pocket or is running for his life.

### Awareness Rating
This is the single most important offensive line attribute, and it is not close. Awareness determines how quickly a lineman identifies blitzers, passes off twists and stunts, and picks up late pressure. A tackle with 90 pass block but 65 awareness will get beaten by basic twists because he reacts too slowly. When recruiting linemen, prioritize awareness above all else.

### Defensive Front Recognition
The AI identifies defensive fronts based on the number of defenders in the box and their alignment:
- **Four-man front (Over/Under)**: Four defenders on the line, two linebackers behind them
- **Three-man front (Odd)**: Three defenders on the line, three linebackers, often a stand-up edge rusher
- **Bear front**: Five defenders on the line, designed to overwhelm interior protection
- **Double A-gap looks**: Two linebackers threatening the A-gaps, creating confusion about who is coming

## Pre-Snap Protection Adjustments

### Slide Protection
Sliding your protection left or right tells your offensive line which direction to prioritize. This is essential against defenses that overload one side. Here is the rule: slide toward the defensive strength. If the defense has four defenders to the right of the center, slide right.

### ID the Mike
Identifying the Mike linebacker is the most important pre-snap adjustment in the game. Your offensive line uses the Mike declaration as the centerpiece of their protection assignments. The Mike is usually the middle linebacker in a 4-3 or the strong-side inside linebacker in a 3-4.

Change your Mike ID based on the blitz look:
- Against double A-gap pressure, ID the linebacker who is showing blitz
- Against edge pressure, ID the defender farthest from the slide direction
- Against zero blitz (no deep safeties), ID the most dangerous blitzer

### Half-Slide Protection
This advanced technique slides protection one way while man-blocking on the back side. It is ideal against defenses that bring pressure from one side while dropping the other into coverage. The half-slide gives you the benefits of slide protection without exposing the back side to unblocked rushers.

## Run Blocking Fundamentals

### Zone vs. Gap Schemes
CFB 27 models the difference between zone and gap blocking authentically:

**Zone Blocking**: Linemen block areas, not specific defenders. This scheme works with athletic linemen who can reach the second level and create cutback lanes. Outside zone stretches the defense horizontally; inside zone attacks the A and B gaps.

**Gap Blocking**: Linemen block specific defenders based on gap assignments. Power, Counter, and Trap are gap scheme runs. This works with powerful linemen who can displace defenders at the point of attack.

Match your scheme to your personnel. Athletic, lighter linemen thrive in zone schemes. Big, powerful linemen dominate in gap schemes. Running a gap scheme with finesse linemen results in negative plays.

### Double Team Mechanics
Double teams in CFB 27 are dynamic. Two linemen initially engage the same defender, then one peels off to block a linebacker. The timing of the peel-off is determined by the defenders reaction to the double team. If the defender tries to split the double, the peel happens later. If the defender anchors, the peel happens sooner.

Understanding double team timing helps you predict where running lanes will develop. The lane typically opens on the side of the peeling lineman.

## Dealing with Elite Pass Rushers

When facing a 90+ rated defensive end, standard protection schemes will fail. You need specialized tactics:
- **Chip with the running back or tight end**: Assign a back or tight end to chip the elite rusher before releasing into their route
- **Roll the pocket away from the rusher**: Designed rollouts move the launch point away from pressure
- **Throw hot**: Identify which receiver becomes the hot route against an unblocked rusher and get the ball out immediately
- **Max protect**: Keep seven or eight blockers in, sacrificing receiving options for protection

## Common Protection Mistakes

1. **Never sliding against an overload**: Walking to the line and snapping the ball without checking the defensive alignment is asking for a sack
2. **ID-ing the wrong Mike**: A misidentified Mike causes your entire protection scheme to collapse
3. **Holding the ball too long**: Even perfect protection breaks down after four seconds
4. **Not adjusting to twists**: If the defense keeps running T-E twists, you must adjust your protection or get your quarterback killed
